In the cinematic resurgence of 2023, cultural moments like Barbenheimer and releases from Greta Gerwig, Martin Scorsese, and Yorgos Lanthimos made it a bustling year for Letterboxd’s 11 million users. The platform, a haven for online cinephiles, unveiled its Year in Review, showcasing the movies that captured users’ attention and affection.

In a Barbenheimer Moment: Christopher Nolan Reigns as the Most-Watched Director on Letterboxd in 2023

As expected, Gerwig’s “Barbie” emerged as the most popular film, both in terms of volume of activity and obsessive rewatches. Margot Robbie, the star of “Barbie,” claimed the spotlight as the most-watched actress on the platform.

In a nod to Christopher Nolan’s brilliance, “Oppenheimer” secured its place as the third-highest-rated film, the highest-rated drama, and contributed to Nolan becoming the most-watched director for the third consecutive year.

The second installment of the animated Spider-Verse saga, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” claimed the top spot as the highest-rated film, closely followed by “Poor Things.” Celine Song’s enchanting “Past Lives” took the crown for the highest-rated directorial debut and romance movie. Jason Schwartzman, propelled by his role in Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” emerged as the most-watched actor.

“Poor Things” earned accolades as the highest-rated comedy, fantasy, and sci-fi movie, while “Talk To Me” claimed the throne as the highest-rated horror film. In the battle of concert films, Beyoncé triumphed over Taylor Swift for the title of highest-rated.

Despite Martin Scorsese’s presence on Letterboxd to promote “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the film did not secure a spot in any category, emphasizing the unique taste of the platform’s user base.
